Radiofrequency ablation of uterine fibroids


Uterine fibroids are very common, and although the majority of fibroids are benign and do not cause any symptoms, in up to one third of the cases women will experience pain, heavy menstrual bleeding and further complications.

Radiofrequency ablation is a gentle thermoablative procedure in which diseased tissue is destroyed by a high-frequency current, while the healthy surrounding tissue is preserved. The RFA is carried out under ultrasound guidance using special RFA electrodes and an RFA generator. In the context of (interventional) gynaecology, this treatment alternative offers decisive advantages compared to conventional hysterectomy or myomectomy. It is minimally invasive and the diseased tissue can be treated in a targeted manner. Furthermore, a general anaesthetic is not absolutely necessary and the procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic and a sedative.
