Ear, nose and throat surgery

Ear, nose and throat surgery includes many nerve-sparing procedures, which means that intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) plays an important role in protecting the facial nerve. IONM is also important in other disciplines, such as neurosurgery or general surgery. By using this technology, surgeons are able to monitor and protect nerve function in real time during surgery ranging from vestibular schwannomas to the parotid gland.

Intraoperative neuromonitoring in ENT surgery

ENT surgery is a delicate, complex and highly precise field, as exemplified by parotid gland surgery. Real-time nerve monitoring is crucial, as nerve damage during surgical interventions can be a serious complication. IONM enables surgeons to identify nerve pathways during oral and maxillofacial surgery and ensure their integrity. Oral and maxillofacial neuromonitoring helps to prevent possible nerve damage. This results in increased safety during surgery.

Advances in technology are opening up further possibilities for advancing IONM and its accuracy. This means that further surgical interventions can be supported within ENT surgery, e.g., hypoglossal neuromonitoring is used when implanting tongue pacemakers to treat obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

Spare nerves – minimise risks

Photo: C2 Xplore with display of typical ENT signals
The facial nerve is often at risk during ENT surgery. Thanks to facial nerve monitoring with the C2 Xplore from inomed, the nerve can be identified and the risk of damage minimised. The C2 Xplore software module for ENT surgery offers comprehensive functionality for ENT neuromonitoring at the highest level. The signal is displayed visually and acoustically by means of an EMG recording.

Comprehensive monitoring with the ISIS IOM systems from inomed is necessary, for example, during the resection of vestibular schwannomas (benign tumours of the sheath cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve). During these interventions, the facial nerve and the auditory nerve are particularly at risk. The ISIS IOM systems enable continuous and comprehensive monitoring of all nerve functions using EMG, MEP, SEP and AEP.
