Ablation

Ablation is one of the minimally invasive medical procedures used to selectively destroy tissue for a variety of indications. This includes, for example, the ablation of thyroid nodules. The minimally invasive technique uses heat or cold to selectively destroy diseased tissue while the surrounding tissue is to be spared.

Types of thermoablation

There are various thermoablation procedures. Minimally invasive procedures, in which heat generated in the tip of the electrode or antenna is used, are basically designed for targeted tissue destruction. These include radiofrequency ablation (RFA). RFA uses high-frequency electrical current to generate heat. The technique has the potential to destroy tumours and other pathological tissue in a targeted manner without damaging surrounding healthy tissue.

Thermoablation techniques also pose certain risks and challenges. The challenge with the thermoablation technique is to ensure that the temperature in the target tissue is sufficiently high to effectively treat it, but at the same time low enough to avoid damage to surrounding structures. This requires precise monitoring during the procedure. It is also crucial to deliver the correct dose of power. The duration of application should be determined individually for each patient, as it can vary depending on the type, size and location of the tumour. Thermoablation procedures are constantly being developed to maximise safety and efficiency. They offer a promising treatment alternative, for example for those patients who are not candidates for surgery.

Radiofrequency ablation

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) originated in Asia and has been around since the early 1990s. It is a highly effective procedure for treating certain medical conditions, ranging from chronic pain to solid tumours in various body systems.

We work exclusively with the South Korean company STARmed Co., Ltd. and can thus offer you a portfolio built on decades of experience in the field of radiofrequency ablation. Our partner is considered a world leader in the field of thyroid RFA. No fewer than 70% of clinical studies on RFA of the thyroid are conducted with STARmed products, and they produce extremely promising clinical results with low complication rates. During radiofrequency ablation, a thin STARmed electrode is inserted into the target area under constant ultrasound guidance to heat diseased tissue with carefully controlled radiofrequency energy. This kills it and causes it to recede over time. Meanwhile, the normal surrounding tissue can be preserved. Patients do not suffer any visible scarring and can usually be treated under local anaesthesia.

The known risks, difficulties and challenges are critically scrutinised through our cooperation with STARmed Co., Ltd. from South Korea and effectively incorporated into product development so that the technology is always up to date. In addition to our many years of experience in the field of intraoperative neuromonitoring, we are setting ourselves new innovative goals with thermoablative procedures in order to contribute to a steady increase in patient welfare. Our main application fields are the treatment of benign nodules of the thyroid, uterine fibroids and liver tumours.

FAQ

For which application fields can RFA be used?

There are numerous established application fields. In addition to the established liver RFA, the areas of thyroid and gynaecology, for example, are receiving more and more attention.

What are the advantages of RFA compared to conventional surgery?

The patients have no scar after the application. Only a local anaesthetic is needed and the recovery time for patients is considerably shorter. As the healthy tissue can be preserved, hormone replacement is also not necessary after the procedure. The procedure can also be carried out in an outpatient setting so that the patients can go home on the same day.

What are the benefits of RFA for my clinical routine?

By adding RFA to your portfolio, you are able to treat a wide range of patients. This minimises patient migration and also contributes to a high level of patient safety, as they are monitored and treated in one facility.
