Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine (ENT)

The most important applications in ENT are monitoring for localisation and function control of the facial nerve during parotid surgery as well as monitoring of the cranial and auditory nerves during removal of acoustic neurinoma, monitoring of the vocal cord during interventions at the larynx and larynx diagnosis.

Fibres of the facial nerves are at risks during interventions near the parotid gland. Damaging these nerves can lead to paralysis of the mimic face muscles and of the muscles and glands innerved by the facial nerve. Monitoring the facial nerve can reduce the risk of such injuries.  >

Acoustic Neurinoma

In case of middle acoustic neurinoma, the hearing and important cranial nerves have to be monitored. An acoustic stimulus at the ear induces (if the stimulus is forwarded without interruption) so-called acoustic evoked potentials (AEPs) in the brain.  >

Thyroid Surgery

Injuries of the vocal cord manifest themselves as hoarseness or temporary of complete vocal cord paralysis. Neuromonitoring reduces the risk of an operative damage of the nerve. A clear statement of the nerve function can be made straight after the intervention.  >
